Half an Inch Decides More Than Two Degrees
Move impact from the centre of a driver face out toward the toe and the ball leaves with less speed, more spin at first, and a curve back toward the middle from gear effect. Move it low and the launch drops while spin climbs. These shifts are large — large enough that a golfer whose contact wanders across a two-inch band will produce a spread of launch conditions that no single loft setting can serve.
So the first twenty minutes of a driver block are spent building a face chart from your own club. Once we can see whether your pattern is tight, low, heel-biased, or genuinely scattered, we know which of two conversations we are having: tuning a stable pattern, or choosing a head that tolerates an unstable one.

The Four Levers, in the Order We Pull Them
Length
Shortening a driver by half an inch tightens most people's face pattern noticeably, and the speed cost is usually smaller than the contact gain. We test this before anything else because it is free to try and it changes what every later test means.
Head and CG
Where the mass sits in the head determines how much of your mishit pattern survives. A low-and-back head behaves very differently from a forward-CG head for the same golfer, and this choice is driven by the chart, not by the badge.
Shaft Profile
Weight first, then bend profile. We are looking for the profile that keeps your face pattern tight under a full swing rather than the one that produces the single fastest ball speed on a practice cut.
Loft and Face Setting
Last, not first. Once contact and shaft are settled, loft is a fine adjustment rather than a rescue attempt. This is also where local air comes into the calculation.
Spin Numbers Copied From Sea Level Will Mislead You Here
Thinner air produces less aerodynamic drag, so the ball carries farther for the same launch conditions. It also produces less lift for the same spin rate, which is the part people forget. The practical result at our altitude is that the flight is flatter and longer, and the spin figure that keeps a ball airborne through the back half of its flight is somewhat higher than the number you would target at a coastal fitting bay.
Golfers who arrive with a driver fitted in Houston or San Diego often find the ball running out of altitude late here, because the setup that was correct there is now a touch too low-spin for the thin air. It is a small correction, but it is worth making, and it is the reason we keep our own reference data rather than reciting published targets.
