Reading a Shaft Without the Marketing Copy
Five specs describe most of what a shaft does. Everything else printed on the label is either a restatement of those five or a name somebody in a marketing department liked.
Weight, the Spec That Changes the Most
If you are only allowed to change one thing about a shaft, change the weight. It affects the total weight of the club, the swingweight, the tempo you naturally fall into, and — most relevant to us — how tightly your contact groups on the face.
The pattern we see on the lane repeats often enough to be worth stating plainly: golfers who struggle with a wide vertical spread frequently tighten up when the shaft gets heavier, even though the heavier shaft costs them a couple of miles per hour of head speed. The centred strike gives back more than the speed took away. It does not hold for everyone, but it is the first thing we test.
Weight also has to progress sensibly through the bag. A driver shaft at 55 grams paired with iron shafts at 120 grams is a jarring transition, and golfers who make it often describe their irons as feeling heavy and their driver as feeling uncontrollable, which is the same problem described from both ends.

Flex Is a Label. Bend Profile Is the Measurement.
There is no industry standard behind the letters printed on a shaft, and two shafts marked identically can measure a full flex apart.
What Flex Letters Really Mean
Regular, stiff, and extra stiff are manufacturer-internal descriptions. One brand's stiff can measure softer than another brand's regular, and within a single brand the designation often shifts between model generations. We measure frequency on the analyser rather than trusting the letter, and we write the measured number on your spec sheet so it means something later.
What Bend Profile Adds
Two shafts can measure the same overall stiffness while being distributed completely differently along their length. A shaft that is soft in the tip and firm in the butt launches differently from its mirror image, even at identical frequency. Bend profile is what separates shafts that look identical on paper, and it is where most of the useful fitting decisions live.
Torque, and Why Lower Is Not Automatically Better
Torque measures how much a shaft twists along its length under load, stated in degrees. Lower numbers resist twisting more. Marketing has trained golfers to read low torque as premium, which is not what the number says.
Low torque tends to feel firm and boardy. Higher torque tends to feel smoother and more active. A golfer with a smooth transition paired with a very low-torque shaft often reports that the club feels dead and that they cannot sense where the head is, and their contact pattern spreads out as a result. Feel is not a soft consideration here; it is how you locate the clubhead in space.
Torque also interacts with weight. Lighter shafts generally carry higher torque values by construction, so comparing torque numbers across very different weights tells you little on its own.
Tip Trimming
Nearly every shaft is sold longer than its finished length and gets trimmed at both ends during assembly. Trimming from the tip stiffens the shaft; trimming from the butt affects it far less. Manufacturer charts specify how much to remove from the tip for each club number, and following or deviating from that chart materially changes the finished playing characteristics.
This is why the same shaft model can play differently in two clubs built by two different shops. It is also why we write the trim we used on your work order.
How to Use This on the Lane
Ask for the Measurement
Any shop that fits shafts should be able to tell you the measured frequency of what they are putting in your hands, not just the letter on the label. If they cannot, the fitting is being done by catalogue.
Judge by the Pattern
A shaft that produces one great number and a scattered face chart lost the test. A shaft that produces slightly duller numbers and a tight chart won it. We keep both sets of data visible so you can see the trade for yourself.
Keep Your Sheet
Your spec sheet lists model, weight, measured frequency, tip trim, and finished length. Bring it back in five years when the model is discontinued and we can match the replacement to numbers rather than to memory.
