Iron Blocks: Low Point Before Loft
Irons are fitted against the ground. Get the ground mark stable and most of the other complaints in the bag quietly resolve themselves.
Where the Arc Bottoms Out Determines What Every Spec Can Do
An iron delivers its stamped loft only when the club arrives at the ball at the intended point in its arc. Bottom out an inch behind the ball and you have added effective loft, lost speed to the turf, and produced a shot that flies high and short with no spin consistency. Bottom out four inches past it and you have delofted the club, dropped the flight, and started taking a divot deep enough to change how the sole exits.
Neither of those problems is solved by a different shaft. Both of them make shaft testing meaningless, because the shaft is being asked to compensate for a delivery error that varies swing to swing. So the turf lane comes first: we read the trace, we find out how consistent your low point is, and we set length and lie to give it the best chance of repeating.

- Low point consistency, which matters more than its absolute position
- Divot direction versus start line, which exposes lie angle problems
- Depth, which tells us how much sole relief the head needs
Ball first, turf second. The trace should start at the ball and deepen past it.
The Most Consequential Number Almost Nobody Checks
A lie angle two degrees off will move a seven iron several yards offline with a perfectly centred strike. It is also the cheapest thing in this entire building to correct.
Tape on the Sole
Impact tape on the sole plus the direction of the turf trace. Toe-side marking and a trace that angles left of the start line tell the same story from two directions, and we want both before bending anything.
Cheap to Fix
Bending a set is bench work measured in minutes per club. Compared with buying new irons to solve a problem that was never about the irons, it is the best value on the price list.
Head Material
Forged heads bend freely. Cast heads have limits and some modern multi-material designs cannot be bent at all. We check what you own before promising an adjustment, and we say no when the head will not take it.
Two Reference Irons, Then a Progression
Fitting every iron in a set independently sounds thorough and produces a bag that does not cooperate. Length, lie, and swingweight need to progress smoothly through a set, and a set assembled from eight independent optimisations tends to have at least one club that feels like a stranger.
So we fit two reference clubs directly, usually a seven iron and a nine or pitching wedge, and then build the rest of the set to a measured progression from those. The long end gets checked against your gap map so the four or five iron does not end up carrying a distance you already cover with a hybrid.
Once the set is assembled, every club goes back on the bench and gets measured: loft, lie, length, swingweight, and frequency. Those finished numbers are written next to the target numbers on your sheet.

You hit more shots with these than with anything except the putter, and the corrections are usually smaller and cheaper than people expect.
